I will be honest, i have the Instagram bug - I love sharing my photos with friends and family and it has certainly helped me to become a better photographer. But I was asked recently if I would recommend it as a social network for service industries.
It took me a little time to think about this seriously as I could see the benefits for consumer products, but could professional service based business also benefit from one of the fastest growing social media sites. The honest answer was yes it can be beneficial if it is actioned correctly. So here are my top tips for setting up Instagram for Business:
1. Make sure you have a strategy
As wilth everything to do with social media, make sure you know what role you want Instagram to play. Is it to raise awareness of your business, promote a particlar service or show the human side of your team.
Know what you want Instagram to do and be consistent!
2. How often are you going to post?
You need to have an idea of how often you are going to post - Instagram is instant and moves very quickly. If you are going to post infrequently then this may not be the platform for you. However, if you can post at least once every 24 hours then this will be fine!
3. What photos are you going to post?
You need to think carefully about the styling of your photos so that they match the brand of your organisation. Are they telling a story and engaging enough to make people react to them?
4. Photo sizes
You need to remember that the photos you post need to be the correct size for Instagram and also a good quality - you are promoting your business and they need to be clear. The ideal size for Instagram photos is:
Profile image: 110 px wide by 110 px tall
Photo size: 1080 px wide by 1080 px tall
Photo thumbnails: 161 px wide by 161 px tall
Unlike Twitter, the more Hashtags you use the better your post is seen. I would recommend you look to use 5 - 10 per post that represent your business and the photo content. It is important you use these correctly to get you to the correct audence for your business.

6. Build your audience
As with all social media accounts you need to make sure you are building your audience by following peers, industry experts, contacts, local area accounts and more. By liking other accounts and commenting on their posts, you help your account get seen by the right audience.
7. Monitor, Monitor, Monitor
You need to monitor how much time you are spending on Social Media and what results you are getting, There is no point spending 1-2 hours a day if you are not receiving any enquries or responses. Set clear metrics that you want to reach and assess closely the results. You can then know for sure if Instagram is the platform for you.
