Whilst there is normally a business plan in place, marketing is often run on an ad-hoc basis with little or no monitoring. We also often hear "it's how we have always done things" - just because if worked once, doesn't mean it will always work in the same way.

A good marketing strategy need not be complicated either. You really don't have to write reams and reams that will never see the light of day. If you make it relevant - it will work! Our own marketing strategy consists of just 3 sheets of paper but we know what we want to achieve this year and what activity is going to help us achieve this - it's all in the planning.
